ARTICLE 8 OF THE CREED: "I BELIEVE IN THE HOLY SPIRIT" IS OUR TOPIC TODAY: OUR SECOND MEDITATION ON THE CREED DURING THIS LENTEN SEASON. I HAVE ENTITLED MY REFLECTION “THE HOLY SPIRIT: THE PROMISED ADVOCATE.”
THE HOLY SPIRIT COMES AS THE THIRD DIVINE PERSON WHO IS THE "OBJECT” OF OUR PROFESSION OF FAITH AFTER THE FATHER AND THE SON. PERHAPS THE MOST MYSTERIOUS OF THE THREE PERSONS OF THE BLESSED TRINITY, YET WHEN WE PROFESS OUR FAITH EACH SUNDAY WE DO SO PRECISELY BY THE GRACE GIVEN BY THE HOLY SPIRIT.
OFTEN THOUGHT OF AS THE “FORGOTTEN PERSON” OF THE BLESSED TRINITY, THE LAST TO BE REVEALED TO US AND REVEALED GRADUALLY IN SALVATION HISTORY, “WE MUST UNDERSTAND [HOWEVER] THAT, FROM THE BEGINNING, HE IS A PART OF OUR SALVATION FROM SIN AND OF THE OFFER OF DIVINE LIFE.” USCCA 105
THE CATECHISM MAKES IT VERY CLEAR AT THE OUTSET THAT "THE HOLY SPIRIT IS AT WORK WITH THE FATHER AND THE SON FROM THE BEGINNING TO THE COMPLETION OF GOD'S PLAN FOR OUR SALVATION." CCC 686 THE 4TH CENTURY ST. GREGORY OF NAZIANZUS DESCRIBES THE GRADUAL REVELATION OF THE HOLY SPIRIT AS THE "DIVINE PEDAGOGY" BY WHICH GOD TEACHES HUMANITY THROUGHOUT HISTORY OF HIS PLAN FOR OUR SALVATION.
ALTHOUGH THE JOINT WORK OF THE FATHER AND SPIRIT REMAINS HIDDEN AND VEILED, UNTIL THE "FULLNESS OF TIME," MENTION IS MADE EARLY ON IN THE HEBREW SCRIPTURES OF THE SPIRIT. I THINK OF PSALM 51 WHICH WE PRAY IN THE LITURGY OF THE HOURS EVERY FRIDAY MORNING: "A PURE HEART CREATE FOR ME, O GOD, PUT A STEADFAST SPIRIT WITHIN ME. DO NOT CAST ME AWAY FROM YOUR PRESENCE, NOR DEPRIVE ME OF YOUR HOLY SPIRIT."
OUR CREED TEACHES US FURTHERMORE THAT THE SPIRIT "HAS SPOKEN THROUGH THE PROPHETS." HOW CAN WE FORGET THE INAUGURAL ADDRESS OF JESUS IN THE SYNAGOGUE AT NAZARETH (Mk 4: 16-21) WHERE HE APPROPRIATED THE PROPHETIC WORDS OF ISAIAH: “THE SPIRIT OF THE LORD IS UPON ME, BECAUSE THE LORD HAS ANOINTED ME. HE HAS SENT ME TO BRING GOOD NEWS TO THE POOR, TO BIND UP THE BROKEN HEARTED, TO PROCLAIM LIBERTY TO CAPTIVES AND TO RELEASE PRISONERS, TO PROCLAIM A YEAR OF THE LORD'S FAVOR" (IS 61: 1-2).
AS WE APPROACH THE "FULLNESS OF TIME," IN THE FIGURES OF JOHN THE BAPTIST WHO WAS "FILLED WITH THE HOLY SPIRIT EVEN FROM HIS MOTHER'S WOMB" (LK 1:15) AND --ABOVE ALL -- THE BLESSED MOTHER, THE PRESENCE OF THE HOLY SPIRIT IS BEING EVEN MORE EXPLICITLY REVEALED. THE CATECHISM TEACHES THAT "IN MARY, THE HOLY SPIRIT FULFILLS THE PLAN OF THE FATHER'S LOVING GOODNESS. WITH AND THROUGH THE HOLY SPIRIT, THE VIRGIN CONCEIVES AND GIVES BIRTH TO THE SON OF GOD. BY THE HOLY SPIRIT'S POWER AND HER FAITH, HER VIRGINITY BECAME UNIQUELY FRUITFUL." CCC 723
FINALLY JESUS! HE DOES NOT REVEAL THE HOLY SPIRIT FULLY UNTIL -- AS WE WILL SEE -- THE UPPER ROOM ON EASTER SUNDAY NIGHT, UNTIL HE HIMSELF HAS BEEN GLORIFIED THROUGH HIS DEATH AND RESURRECTION -- NEVERTHELESS HE ALLUDES TO THE SPIRIT, FOR EXAMPLE, LITTLE BY LITTLE -- IN SPEAKING TO NICODEMUS AND TO THE SAMARITAN WOMAN. "...CHRIST'S WHOLE WORK IS, IN FACT, A JOINT MISSION OF THE SON AND THE HOLY SPIRIT." CCC 727
AGAIN, WE FIND OURSELVES THIS MORNING (EVENING) OUT OF SINK LITURGICALLY. IN THESE VERY DAYS, CHURCHES AROUND THE WORLD ARE TEARING APART THE PALMS FOR THIS COMING SUNDAY -- FOR PASSION (PALM) SUNDAY, FOR THE BEGINNING OF HOLY WEEK --THE HOLIEST WEEK IN THE ENTIRE LITURGICAL YEAR.
AND YET OUR MEDITATION THIS MORNING (EVENING) IS ON THE HOLY SPIRIT, WHOSE SOLEMNITY WE CELEBRATE 50 DAYS FROM EASTER WHEN PALMS ARE A THING OF THE PAST. IN FACT, THE SOLEMNITY OF PENTECOST OFFICIALLY CLOSES THE EASTER SEASON.
I PROMISED YOU THAT I WOULD TRY AND RECONCILE THIS APPARENT LITURGICAL/CATECHETICAL COLLISION WHICH OUR SCHEDULING HAS CREATED.
WHERE DO WE TURN?
THE KEY LOCUS IS THE UPPER ROOM, THE ROOM WHERE WE GATHER THIS COMING THURSDAY NIGHT, MAUNDY THURSDAY, HOLY THURSDAY, THE NIGHT WHEN OUR BLESSED SAVIOR INSTITUED THE PRIESTHOOD AND THE HOLY EUCHARIST BEFORE HE DIED. IT IS ALSO THE PLACE WHERE ST. JOHN RECALLS THE LONGEST FAREWELL ADDRESS IN HISTORY --JESUS LEAVE-TAKING TO HIS DISCIPLES. THEY ARE REFERRED TO AS THE LAST SUPPER DISCOURSES -- CHAPTERS 14, 15, 16, 17 OF ST. JOHN'S GOSPEL.
IN HIS MOST RECENT APOSTOLIC LETTER ON THE EUCHARIST, “SACRAMENT OF CHARITY,” BENEDICT XVI REFERS TO THE “SO-CALLED ‘FAREWELL DISCOURSE’ REPORTED BY JOHN” -- HE STATES THAT “JESUS CLEARLY RELATES [THERE] THE GIFT OF HIS LIFE IN THE PASCHAL MYSTERY TO THE GIFT OF THE SPIRIT TO HIS OWN (CF. JN 16:7). ONCE RISEN, BEARING IN HIS FLESH THE SIGNS OF THE PASSION, HE CAN POUR OUT THE SPIRIT UPON THEM (CF. JN 20:22) MAKING THEM SHARERS IN HIS OWN MISSION (CF. 20:21).” (SC 12)
IT IS PRECISELY THERE IN THE UPPER ROOM ON THE NIGHT BEFORE HE DIED THAT JESUS PROMISED AND PREDICTED THAT HE WOULD SEND THE HOLY SPIRIT. WE NEED NOT WAIT LITURGICALLY TO PENTECOST TO SPEAK OF THE HOLY SPIRIT. JESUS SPOKE OF THE HOLY SPIRIT THE VERY NIGHT BEFORE HE DIED. IN FACT, THE HOLY SPIRIT COMES AS THE PRICE OF CHRIST'S DEPARTURE. "BUT I TELL YOU THE TRUTH, IT IS BETTER FOR YOU THAT I GO. FOR IF I DO NOT GO, THE ADVOCATE WILL NOT COME TO YOU. BUT IF I GO, I WILL SEND HIM TO YOU." (JN 16:7) HE WILL SEND "ANOTHER COUNSELLOR" (JN 14:16), THE SPIRIT OF TRUTH, THE PARACLETE -- “A TERM THAT DESCRIBES HIM AS ADVOCATE AND CONSOLER.” USCCA 103 "BUT THE COUNSELLOR, THE HOLY SPIRIT, WHOM THE FATHER WILL SEND IN MY NAME, WILL TEACH YOU ALL THINGS, AND BRING YOU TO YOUR REMEMBRANCE ALL THAT I HAVE SAID TO YOU." (JN 14:26)
"HE WILL TEACH...AND BRING TO REMEMBRANCE" -- NOT ONLY DOES THAT MEAN THAT HE WILL CONTINUE TO INSPIRE THE SPREADING OF THE GOSPEL IN OUR TIME BUT ALSO THAT THE HOLY SPIRIT WILL HELP US UNDERSTAND THE CORRECT MEANING OF CHRIST'S MESSAGE -- THAT WE WILL BE INSPIRED BY THE POWER OF THE HOLY SPIRIT.
JESUS WAS PREPARING HIS DISCIPLES, AND YOU AND ME, IN THE UPPER ROOM ON THE NIGHT BEFORE HE DIED FOR HIS MISSION, FOR THE CHALLENGE TO CONTINUE HIS MISSION. AND THE HOLY SPIRIT WAS ESSENTIAL FOR THIS. IN A SPECIAL WAY, THE DISCIPLES WERE TO BE ASSOCIATED WITH THE HOLY SPIRIT. "WHEN THE COUNSELLOR COMES, WHOM I SHALL SEND TO YOU FROM THE FATHER, EVEN THE SPIRIT OF TRUTH, WHO PROCEEDS FROM THE FATHER, HE WILL BEAR WITNESS TO ME; AND YOU ARE ALSO WITNESSES." (JN 15: 26)
"I HAVE YET MANY THINGS TO SAY TO YOU, BUT YOU CANNOT BEAR THEM NOW. WHEN THE SPIRIT OF TRUTH COMES, HE WILL GUIDE YOU INTO ALL THE TRUTH." (JN 16:12)
DO YOU GET THE DRIFT?
JESUS IS DESCRIBING THE HOLY SPIRIT TO THEM -- THE SPIRIT WILL TEACH THEM, HELP THEM TO REMEMBER WHAT JESUS TAUGHT THEM, THE SPIRIT WILL GUIDE THEM INTO ALL THE TRUTH, THE SPIRIT WILL BEAR WITNESS TO HIM AND IN TURN THEY WILL BEAR WITNESS TO HIM ALSO.
AND SO HE LEAVES THEM FOR CALVARY FOLLOWING NOT HIS WILL BUT THE WILL OF THE FATHER WHO SENT HIM.
JESUS RETURNED TO THE UPPER ROOM, IN THE WORDS OF JOHN 20:19, "ON THE EVENING OF THAT FIRST DAY OF THE WEEK," ON EASTER SUNDAY NIGHT -- AFTER HIS GLORIOUS RESURRECTION. IT IS THE JOHANNINE PENTECOST. IT IS THERE THAT HE TWICE GAVE THEM HIS PEACE AND BREATHED ON THEM AND SAID TO THEM “ ‘RECEIVE THE HOLY SPIRIT. WHOSE SINS YOU FOGIVE ARE FORGIVEN THEM, AND WHOSE SINS YOU RETAIN ARE RETAINED.’” JN 20: 22-23
IN THESE WORDS, AS EXPLAINED BY OUR LATE HOLY FATHER JOHN PAUL II IN HIS THIRD ENCYCLICAL LETTER DOMINUM ET VIVIFICANTEM (THE LORD AND GIVER OF LIFE) PROMULGATED ON PENTECOST 1986 -- OVER 20 YEARS AGO: JESUS “FULFILLED THE PRINCIPAL PREDICTION OF THE FAREWELL DISCOURSE: THE RISEN CHRIST, AS IT WERE BEGINNING A NEW CREATION, ‘BRINGS’ TO THE APOSTLES THE HOLY SPIRIT. HE BRINGS HIM AT THE PRICE OF HIS OWN ‘DEPARTURE’: HE GIVES THEM THIS SPIRIT AS IT WERE THROUGH THE WOUNDS OF HIS CRUCIFIXION: ‘HE SHOWED THEM HIS HANDS AND HIS SIDE.’ IT IS IN THE POWER OF THIS CRUCIFIXION THAT HE SAYS TO THEM: ‘RECEIVE THE HOLY SPIRIT.’” DV 2
YES, IN THAT SAME UPPER ROOM, THE PROMISE OF THE HOLY SPIRIT WAS MADE AND THE SENDING OF THE HOLY SPIRIT TO THE DISCIPLES GATHERED THERE TOOK PLACE!
EVER SINCE, THE HOLY SPIRIT HAS BEEN WITH THE CHURCH MAKING US ALIVE. “THE HOLY SPIRIT IS DYNAMIC, TRANSFORMING OUR BODIES INTO TEMPLES OF GOD AND OUR SOULS INTO DWELLING PLACES FOR CHRIST. SOMETIMES CALLED THE PARACLETE, A TERM THAT DESCRIBES HIM AS ADVOCATE AND CONSOLER, THE HOLY SPIRIT WANTS TO FILL US WITH INSPIRATION AND ENCOURAGEMENT.” USCCA 103
IN THAT GREAT DOCUMENT OF THE VATICAN COUNCIL, DEI VERBUM, WE LEARN: “THE TRADITION THAT COMES TO US FROM THE APOSTLES MAKES PROGRESS IN THE CHURCH, WITH THE HELP OF THE HOLY SPIRIT.” DV 8 THE SPIRIT IS LIFE-GIVING. THE SPIRIT IS AN EXPERIENCE OF GOD’S LOVE.
BOTH THE CATECHISM OF THE CATHOLIC CHURCH AND THE NEW UNITED STATES CATECHISM FOR ADULTS SET FORTH 8 WAYS BY WHICH WE COME TO KNOW THE HOLY SPIRIT AND EXPERIENCE HIM IN THE LIFE OF THE CHURCH:
“-- IN THE SCRIPTURE HE INSPIRED;
-- IN THE TRADITION TO WHICH THE CHURCH FATHERS ARE ALWAYS TIMELY WITNESSES;
-- IN THE CHURCH MAGISTERIUM, WHICH HE ASSISTS;
-- IN THE SACRAMENTAL LITURGY, THROUGH ITS WORDS AND SYMBOLS, IN WHICH THE HOLY SPIRIT PUTS US IN COMMUNION WITH CHRIST;
-- IN PRAYER, WHERE HE INTERCEDES FOR US;
-- IN THE CHARISMS AND MINISTRIES BY WHICH THE CHURCH IS BUILT UP;

THE 5TH CENTURY MARK THE HERMIT USED TO SAY ABOUT THE HOLY SPIRIT -- HOW DO I KNOW I HAVE THE HOLY SPIRIT WITHIN ME? IN THE SAME WAY A MOTHER KNOWS SHE IS PREGNANT. THERE IS LIFE WITHIN HER AND THAT LIFE WITHIN US IS THE HOLY SPIRIT.
A PARENT IS HAVING A DIFFICULT TIME DEALING WITH A TEENAGER, TO USE A SIMPLE EXAMPLE, AND IS NOT SURE WHAT TO DO. THE PARENT IS ALMOST OUT OF ENERGY IN DEALING WITH THE CHALLENGES PRESENTED. HE (SHE) PRAYS TO THE HOLY SPIRIT FOR ENTHUSIASM. AND THE GIFTS AND FRUITS OF THE HOLY SPIRIT BLOSSOM IN THAT PERSON -- THE PATIENCE, COURAGE, WISDOM AND COUNSEL.
THERE IS A DYNAMISM THAT TAKES HOLD OF US WHEN WE PRAY TO THE HOLY SPIRIT. THE DISCIPLES RECEIVED THE GIFTS OF THE HOLY SPIRIT AT PENTECOST IN THE UPPER ROOM AND THEY BECAME DYNAMIC MISSIONARIES AND WERE THEREAFTER WILLING TO SUFFER FOR CHRIST WITH THEIR LIVES. SO IS THAT POSSIBLE WITH US IF ONLY WE LEARN TO BEG AND PRAY TO THE HOLY SPIRIT FOR HIS GIFTS. THE HOLY SPIRIT IS THE BREATH OF PRAYER.THE HOLY SPIRIT IS ALSO THE GIFT WHO COMES INTO OUR HEARTS.
IT IS THE SAME HOLY SPIRIT THAT FIRST CAME TO US AT OUR BAPTISMS WHEN WE BECOME TEMPLES OF THE HOLY SPIRIT AND OUR SINS ARE WASHED AWAY AND WE BECOME AS WELL CHILDREN OF GOD THE FATHER AND MEMBERS OF THE BODY OF CHRIST.
AT CONFIRMATION, THE BISHOP SEALS US WITH CHRISM AND THE HOLY SPIRIT IS CONFERRED UPON US TO ENABLE US TO BE STRENGTHENED TO PURSUE THE MISSION OF CHRIST TO TRANSFORM THE WORLD.
POPE BENEDICT UNDERSCORES IN HIS RECENT APOSTOLIC LETTER ON THE EUCHARIST THAT “IT IS THROUGH THE WORKING OF THE SPIRIT THAT CHRIST HIMSELF CONTINUES TO BE PRESENT AND ACTIVE IN HIS CHURCH, STARTING WITH HER VITAL CENTRE WHICH IS THE EUCHARIST.” SC 12 HE STATES FURTHER THAT “AGAINST THIS BACKDROP WE CAN UNDERSTAND THE DECISIVE ROLE PLAYED BY THE HOLY SPIRIT IN THE EUCHARISTIC CELEBRATION, PARTICULARLY WITH REGARD TO TRANSUBSTANTIATION.” SC 13
AFTER RECOGNIZING HOW "ALL LIFE" AND "ALL HOLINESS" COMES BY THE WORKING OF THE HOLY SPIRIT, THE THIRD EUCHARISTIC PRAYER AT MASS INVOKES GOD'S SPIRIT: "AND SO FATHER, WE BRING YOU THESE GIFTS, WE ASK YOU TO MAKE THEM HOLY BY THE POWER OF YOUR SPIRIT, THAT THEY MAY BECOME THE BODY AND BLOOD OF YOUR SON, OUR LORD JESUS CHRIST, AT WHOSE COMMAND WE CELEBRATE THIS EUCHARIST." OR THE SECOND EUCHARISTIC PRAYER WHERE WE HEAR THE PRIEST’S PRAYER TO THE FATHER: “LET YOUR SPIRIT COME UPON THESE GIVES TO MAKE THEM HOLY SO THAT THEY MAY BECOME FOR US THE BODY AND BLOOD OF OUR LORD, JESUS CHRIST.” AND SO IN THE POWER OF THE HOLY SPIRIT, BREAD AND WINE AND TRANSFORMED INTO HIS BODY AND BLOOD BY THE MINISTRY OF THE PRIEST.
NOR CAN WE FORGET THE HEALING POWER OF CONFESSION. IN JOHN 16:7, JESUS SAYS : "AND WHEN HE COMES, HE WILL CONVINCE (CONVICT) THE WORLD CONCERNING SIN AND RIGHTEOUSNESS AND JUDGEMENT." IMPORTANTLY, THE “HE” REFERS TO THE HOLY SPIRIT WHO CONVICTS US OF OUR SINS. HE SENT THE HOLY SPIRIT AMONG US FOR THE FORGIVENESS OF OUR SINS IN THE SACRAMENT OF PENANCE. NOR CAN WE FORGET THE PRAYER OF THE PRIEST IN CONFESSION: “GOD THE FATHER OF MERCIES, THROUGH THE DEATH AND RESURRECTION OF HIS SON HAS RECONCILED THE WORLD TO HIMSELF AND SENT THE HOLY SPIRIT AMONG US FOR THE FORGIVENESS OF SINS...”
THESE PRAYERS, ONE TAKEN FROM THE SACRAMENT OF PENANCE AND TWO FROM THE EUCHARISTIC PRAYERS AT MASS, TYPIFY THE WAY ROMAN CATHOLICS AND OTHER CHRISTIANS ACKNOWLEDGE GOD'S SPIRIT TO BE AT WORK TODAY BRINGING LIFE, HOLINESS AND GROWTH TO A WOUNDED HUMAN RACE.
THESE EXPERIENCES OF THE HOLY SPIRIT WOULD NOT BE POSSIBLE IF JESUS HAD NOT LEFT THAT UPPER ROOM AND CONTINUED THE NEXT DAY TO CALVARY, TO DEATH ON A TREE OUT OF LOVE FOR US. CHRIST'S DEPARTURE FROM THEM, HIS DEATH AND RESURRECTION, WAS AN INDISPENSABLE CONDITION FOR THE SENDING AND THE COMING OF THE HOLY SPIRIT. "IF I DO NOT GO AWAY, THE COUNSELLOR WILL NOT COME TO YOU; BUT IF I GO, I WILL SEND HIM TO YOU." HIS DEPARTURE IS THUS LINKED TO THE VERY MYSTERY OF OUR REDEMPTION. THE NEW LIFE PROMISED IN THE HOLY SPIRIT CAN ONLY HAPPEN AS A RESULT OF CHRIST'S DEATH, HIS OWN SELF-EMPTYING ON A TREE.
THE FIRST LINE OF THE CATECHISM ON THE HOLY SPIRIT STATES, CITING ST. PAUL, THAT "NO ONE CAN SAY 'JESUS IS LORD' EXCEPT BY THE HOLY SPIRIT." (1COR 12:3) TO BE IN TOUCH WITH CHRIST, HIS LIFE, WE MUST FIRST HAVE BEEN TOUCHED BY THE HOLY SPIRIT. YOU AND I, INITIATED INTO THE CATHOLIC LIFE BY BAPTISM, CONFIRMATION AND HOLY COMMUNION, MUST DAILY IMPLORE THE LIFE-GIVING ASSISTANCE OF THE HOLY SPIRIT. THE GIFTS OF THE HOLY SPIRIT MUST BE RECEIVED AND ACCEPTED. IF USED, YIELDED TO, WE READILY SEE THE FRUITS OF THEM IN OUR CONCRETE LIVES -- CHARITY, JOY, PEACE, PATIENCE, KINDNESS, GOODNESS, GENEROSITY, GENTLENESS, FAITHFULNESS, MODESTY, SELF-CONTROL, AND CHASTITY. (GAL 5:22-23)
THE TERM 'SPIRIT' TRANSLATES THE HEBREW WORD RUAH WHICH IN ITS FIRST SENSE MEANS BREATH, AIR OR WIND. THINK OF THE IMAGES USED TO DESCRIBE THE HOLY SPIRIT. THE CATECHISM LISTS 9 OF THEM -- WATER (HOLY SPIRIT’S ACTION AT BAPTISM); ANOINTING (WITH OIL AT CONFIRMATION); FIRE (TRANSFORMING ENERGY SYMBOLIZED IN THE TONGUES OF FIRE); CLOUD AND LIGHT (THEOPHANIES OF GOD IN OT AND NT); SEAL (INDELIBLE EFFECT OF THE ANOINTING); HAND (HEALING THROUGH LAYING ON OF HIS HAND); FINGER (FINGER TO CAST OUT DEMONS); AND THE DOVE (OVER CHRIST AT HIS BAPTISM). CCC 694-701
FINALLY, THE HOLY SPIRIT, GOD'S GIFT OF LOVE TO US, TO HIS CHURCH, TO HIS BODY, IS THE SOURCE OF NEW LIFE IN CHRIST. THE HOLY SPIRIT IS THE LIVING BREATH OF PRAYER. THE MISSION OF CHRIST AND THE HOLY SPIRIT IS BROUGHT TO COMPLETION IN THE CHURCH, WHICH IS THE BODY OF CHRIST AND THE TEMPLE OF THE HOLY SPIRIT. "THE HOLY SPIRIT, WHOM CHRIST THE HEAD (OF THE CHURCH) POURS OUT ON HIS MEMBERS, BUILDS, ANIMATES, AND SANCTIFIES THE CHURCH." CCC 747 IN THE WORDS OF ST.
